Wythe County completes Reed Creek Blueway project giving another public access to the creek

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. – Hanging out by Reed Creek and enjoying all this nature around it just got a little bit easier for folks in Wythe County.

A $100,000 project has officially wrapped up in Wythe County. It opens new public access points to enjoy Historic Reed Creek.

Funded through grants by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation’s Preservation Trust Fund Program, the Blueway Project has been a goal for seven years.

Ryan Lawson with the Wythe County Board of Supervisors, who headed this project, tells me this should be great for everyone in the county.

“We received probably hundreds of photos of families kayaking or fishing and saying you know if you don’t either own property on the creek or know somebody that does, its not easy to access,” Lawson said. “I thought, ‘What can we do as a county to add more?’”

At the access points, there is free parking, a picnic area, a fishing bank, and a launch point for kayakers.

Folks who are in town and will be able to use this space say outdoor recreation is a staple in this community, and this is great for the entire county.

“The kids can come play, its safe its clean,” said members of the Yates family, who live in Wythe County. “You have steps going down there to the creek it just makes it so much easier.”

“We didn’t know where there was any access to the creek to go fishing so this will be really nice,” said Laura Bell, who also lives in Wythe County.

Leaders with the county said now that the Blueway is open, they hope to see more people out enjoying Reed Creek.
